Model aircraft fall under the classification of Small Unmanned Aircraft (SUA) by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) along with drones. Due in part to the irresponsible use of drones the government has brought in new legislation during 2019 that covers model aircraft as well as drones. All model aircraft pilots now need to Register with the CAA as Operators of SUA and pass a Competency Test before flying their models. Details of this can be found on the CAA website at or the BMFA website at As a BMFA club, we can let you have introductory flights and some initial training without the need to Register with the CAA or complete their Competency Test when supervised by one of our club trainers. Once you have decided you want to take up model flying more seriously, then we can handle all of the Registration and Competency Testing through the BMFA with your club membership.
